Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a complex behaviour, routinely engaged for emotion regulatory purposes.
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the deliberate damage to the body in the absence of intent to die, and commonly includes behaviours such as skin cutting and self-battery (Nock, 2009).
Although self-injury is not age limited, up to one in five adolescents and 13% of young adults self-injure (Muehlenkamp, Claes, Havertape, & Plener, 2012; Swannell, Martin, Page, Hasking, & St John, 2014).
, 2006) is a behavioural model designed specifically to explain self-injurious behaviour.
Early work supported the model in women with BPD (Hulbert & Thomas, 2010) and in communitybased samples, where individuals who self-injure reported more experiential avoidance and avoidance strategies such as thought suppression, than people who did not report self-injury (Anderson & Crowther, 2012).
